He has an approval rating of well over 80% with the Russian people. They will change their minds reluctantly because of Putin's jingoism about making Russia great again. Russia has a strong propaganda machine. Any sanctions placed on Russia will not start to show effects until much later than March. Europe still needs Russia's gas so will not do anything drastic to stop Putin but they will turn up the rhetoric which in turn will make Putin more confident. It will take many more Ukranian victories before that confidence is shaken.
