Context. On June 29, India announced that 59 Chinese origin applications will be blocked, citing “activities… prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.” Among the applications included in the ban is the popular video sharing service TikTok, produced by the Chinese company ByteDance. India is ByteDance’s second largest market after China, with over 120 million active users (Business of Apps). The Indian government previously blocked access to TikTok for two weeks in April 2019 (CNN).

Resolution Notes

India has given Tik Tok three weeks (until July 22) to respond to a long list of questions. If it does not respond by then, India says the ban will be permanent.
