Microsoft may have the intention to make their chinese research division be weaker due to geopolitical reasons, but they can't close the lab without suffering retaliation from the chinese government. Accordingly to Finance Yahoo, Microsoft has little exposure to China, but nonetheless, they depend on chinese/taiwanese hardware. If Microsoft decides to completely leave China, it may be interpreted as a sign of untrust coming from the West, which would increase geopolitical tension.
