The Task Force on Synthetic Biology and the Bioeconomy found that having a diverse bioeconomy workforce is key to US competitiveness in these fields. The National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine argues that competitiveness will require education, funding, and workforce development.
In FY22, the US appropriated $82 million to STEAM and Computer Science Grants. For FY23, the House bill includes $87 million (see pg. 259 of the Committee Markup). The Senate does not earmark a specific amount for this program (see pg. 252 of the Senate version introduced this summer). See the tables designated “Absolute Priority 3 (STEM)” for a list of grants that have been funded through this program in past years.
If the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill for FY23 is not passed and signed by the U.S. President before 31 December 2022, this question will resolve at the level allocated in FY22.
NOTE: The U.S. federal government’s fiscal year runs from 1 October of one calendar year through 30 September of the next. FY23 refers to the fiscal year beginning 1 October 2022 and ending 30 September 2023.
