Automakers in the United States reported 400 crashes involving vehicles with partially autonomous driver assistance systems, including 273 involving Tesla cars, according to statistics released Wednesday by federal regulators.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) cautioned against using the numbers to compare manufacturers, saying it did not consider the number of vehicles from each manufacturer using the systems or how many kilometers those vehicles traveled.

Manufacturers reported crashes from July of last year through May 15 of this year, under an order from the agency, which is extensively examining such crashes for the first time.
